What are your GAP plays?

I recently heard a professional athlete talking on the radio about “GAP” plays and it made me think about how that concept also related to our business. A GAP play is known as a “Game Altering Play” that will make the difference in a game. I also relate this to what we call “Critical Success Factors” in our business as we try to achieve business goals or objectives to have a winning season. The athlete mentioned that 2-3 GAP plays will be the difference in any game. Therefore, I started applying this concept to my business and wanted to share with you hoping it can help you stay focused in your business world of daily distractions.

The GAP plays that I focus on help me in the areas of personal development, business relationships, and company goals. We all have company goals that we focus on each year in regard to quality, sales growth, and profitability. Therefore, I write down 2-3 GAP plays to focus on each quarter that will impact these areas. Some of the areas might be to schedule X number of client lunches each quarter to review trends and talk about strategies to elevate the moving experience for employees relocating, or identifying X number of ways to improve quality scores when meeting with customers during the pre-move survey process, or possibly attend X number of business luncheons to network and learn more about how others are driving success in the related field.

In HR for example, GAP plays might include attending 3 business luncheons to network and benchmark other companies, or connecting with 6 people (that’s 2 per month) in your field to discuss strategy and trends in your area, apply for a professional certification, or even meet with 3 managers in your company to find out how you can add more value to the business.

Writing down these 2-3 GAP plays each quarter will drive productivity and success. It is less overwhelming to focus on a few things at a time, and will help increase your confidence as you keep track of your successes.

Call to action: Review year-end goals, then write down 2-3 GAP plays you can focus on next quarter that will help you stay focused on what’s important, and minimize distractions along the way. The best part is these 2-3 GAP plays each quarter will make the difference in your personal life, and in your company’s success.
