July is a great time for vacations, barbeques, and celebrating our nation’s independence from Great Britain over 230 years ago. It is also a great time to reflect on 2015 goals since July officially starts the 2nd half of 2015. How are you doing in the area of your goals and objectives from both business and personal perspective? In 1993, The Buffalo Bills fell behind the Houston Oilers in the playoffs by the score of 35-3. Down by more than 4 touchdowns, Bills quarterback Frank Reich threw four touchdowns to lead the Bills back to a 41-38 win in the biggest comeback in NFL history known as “The Comeback”. It’s not how you start the year, but how you finish. This is a great time to reflect, review, and make adjustments. Here are 3 strategic questions to ask yourself to plan a successful 2nd half in business and in your personal life.
- What should I keep doing? This is about reflecting and continuing to do the things that are working for you today. For me, it’s about studying industry insights to share with my team and our clients, expanding my network to be resourceful, and working on my personal growth to be a better leader.
- What should I stop doing? This is the time to take action on some of the things that are currently draining your time and resources. Is it something that you can delegate to someone else? Maybe it’s time to discontinue the project to free up some time for other projects if you are not seeing results.
- What should I start doing? This can be considered the “fear zone” which is why you may not already be doing it. Do you need invest time in taking a class to learn a new skill, start that project you have on your wish list, or possibly read/listen to a book to help you grow in a core competency? These areas include risks, which require action. Its time to take that first step!
The 2nd half of the year is starting, so what adjustments will you make? One of the things I do is reach out to people that I know and trust to gain their perspective on my blind spots. Once you see the blind spots from their view, it’s easier to make adjustments.
Call to action: Be Courageous! Send your boss, business partner, or friend these questions and ask for their feedback. They will appreciate the value you see in them, and you will also benefit from the information you receive to set yourself up for winning in 2015! It’s a win/win!
