Are YOU on the list?

As we get ready to close another year, it’s a great time to reflect on the past 12 months. What were your successes? What goals did you achieve, and which goals did you fall short? Who did you meet that made impact in your life? What can you do in 2016 to elevate your growth and add more value to your company or people in your network?

Recently, I attended an event in which the speaker shared a story about all of the people that have paved the way for him to get to where he is today. We can all relate to this, right? You can close your eyes and see at least 3 people that have mentored you, inspired you, and helped you get to where you are today…. BUT, here is the challenge.

How many people have YOU on their list?

As you consider your goals for 2016, think about including these 3 things for impact:

  • Send Thank You Notes: This is an area that can make significant impact. When you read a book that provides ideas for you to advance, or grow professionally – send the author a note to let him or her know your takeaways. This will not only let them know about the impact they have on others, but remind you of the takeaways to share with others. Some of my best moments have been receiving notes from customers to let me know how we made their relocation a great experience during a stressful time. This gives me great joy because it reminds me why I enjoy my profession so much – even when times are tough.
  • Share your goals and dreams: When you share your goals and dreams, it will do a couple of things. First, it will hold you more accountable and help you get focused on trying to achieve the goal. It will also allow others to see your vulnerability, and let them understand areas where they might be able to help you get to where you are going. I share my goals each year with those in my network so they know what’s important to me and where they can help.
  • Be a Mentor. When someone reaches out for help, do we stop and really listen? It might be a brief conversation in the office, or at a business luncheon, or just an email. I think most of us do try to help in some way. This is a great opportunity to ask questions such as what are their goals, and dream jobs so we can provide guidance to help them get to the next step. Share your experience and areas they might consider for personal growth. You never know, but stopping and listening just might put YOU on their list to share with others one day.

Call to action: If you have been inspired by someone lately or read a great book that has inspired you, schedule a few minutes to write a personal a note to let them know about the impact it has on you. They will enjoy hearing from you, and you will enjoy the impact it has on you too! Be inspiring for someone today.

    1. Yes, YOU are Sandi! Great times on the Government Affairs committee back in the day. Looking forward to 2016! Let’s connect more and find ways to partner. I recently read a quote “the more you experience, the more you can share with others” -Sara Blakely… So glad to be on this journey with you my friend!
