It’s not too late to make a new year’s resolution!

I speak with many people each year about new years resolutions and understand many people don’t like to make them because they are more likely to fail than to have success. Statistics show that more than 50% of people that make a new year’s resolutions fail after the first 8 days, and 75% by the end of the month. In fact, if you make it to the end of the year, you are among the elite in which only about 10% achieve success. The people that have success have something in common which is “desire”. They are either inspired to make a change to better themselves or something they are attached to, or they are so desperate to make a change they will not stop until they have success.

Each year, I write down resolutions, or changes I want to make in the new year. In 1998, my wife purchased a journal for me to write in while my grandmother’s health was declining. This was the start of my journaling and have kept it up for more than 20 years. I journal every day, and have resolved to do this in different areas of my life, and career. It is now a habit and part of my everyday disciplines.  When someone makes a resolution, they are making the choice to be better for their family, their company, their community, but most importantly for themselves. When we get better, we can help others around us get better which brings more joy in our life.

Have you thought about a new year’s resolutions? What about a resolution in your career? What is something you can resolve to do this year that will make things around you better, and bring more joy for you and people around you. What about resolving to bring a better experience for your team members in your HR or Talent Acquisition roles, or for supporting a better onboarding experience for talent around mobility?

Consider some of these resolutions that can align with your career below:

  1. Build your HR or Mobility Network
  2. Update a policy that has been neglected
  3. Talking to a candidate each week, or send out survey for to track experience
  4. Attend an HR, Talent, or Mobility Conference
  5. Meet with a vendor to talk goals for success
  6. Connect with a leader in your company to discuss how to get better
  7. Resolve to learn more about your team such as birthdays and what inspires them
  8. Invest time with a coach to help you with personal development
  9. Make a goal to meet with someone new for coffee each month/12 new contacts!
  10. Sign up to volunteer for something important to you!
  11. Take a certification or college class(es)
  12. Sign up for toastmasters to be a better speaker, or start a group!
  13. Start a book club with your team members!
  14. Start a newsletter and spotlight employees
  15. Invest in “learning your business” by investing time in different departments.

Making a new year’s resolution is a choice. It’s a choice to stick with it when times are tough, it’s a choice to share it with others for accountability, and it’s a choice to want to get better. When I decided to write a book, I had a friend tell me that when you decide to make a new resolution, you have to find a good anchor, or have a strong “WHY” you want to achieve it. This is exactly what kept me going during the process. My “why” was that I wanted to capture stories for my family to read, and I wanted to encourage others looking to Find Their Lane in their career. In my book, I share the story about burning the boats. When you make the commitment to make a new resolution, you need to “burn the boats” and do whatever it takes to not quit and retreat even when you are struggling through the process. In the end, you will be better, and everyone around you will be better too! Now, that’s a great WHY to get started this week!

Call to Action: Write down something that you would like to change this year and share with a colleague. Keep it in front of you until you achieve the desired outcome. Then write down another resolution. The good news is that you don’t have to wait until the new year!
