Transform your leadership to serve for success!

I was recently a guest on the #6DegreesorLess Podcast with Seth McColley discussing the power of networking. Seth is a strong HR leader that has a passion for networking and serving others. His podcast will be airing soon, so stay tuned. It was an incredible experience because we were actually podcasting from his car. In my book, Find Your Lane, I talk about “The Carpool Lane” and the importance of expanding your network. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine carpooling while on a podcast with Seth. It was a great experience and wanted to share some of the highlights that we discussed.

I like to say “your network is your net worth”. Think about it… Look around at the people you are connected to. Not just connected to, but have a relationship with or recently started building a relationship. It’s fulfilling to think about the people you have met during your career all because you took action and made the choice to show up. The biggest question I get from people is how to approach networking. My response is to have a “serve first” approach with everyone you meet. It starts with showing up with a serving heart, being interested in others to learn how to add value, and following up with resources to help them accelerate in their role. When we serve with excellence, we learn from others, build trust, and add value to everyone we meet. Networking is serving. It’s about adding value and helping others along any path.

Seth and I had a great time discussing the importance of networking and serving others in three different areas:

  1. External networking to have the courage to meet others outside of your company. The more people you get to know, the more resources you have to help others. There are amazing people that can be an accelerator for your career when you have the courage to take action and serve them with a purpose.
  2. Internal networking to meet and develop relationships with colleagues is huge. This is an area to take advantage of since you are already working together. Walk around the office and find out what makes your co-workers go. You can learn so much from each other!
  3. Social Networking to“virtually” meet and learn from others on the journey. I continue to learn from thought leaders (or influencers)  on social media. I haven’t met many of the people I follow, but when I engage and add value, I feel like we have been lifelong friends.

We often don’t think about #2 and #3, but they are just as important. There are different networks we can serve and make maximum impact around us.

When I have customers moving out of the Dallas area, I often drive to the job to see how the moving is going for both the customer, as well as the moving crew (internal customer). Before I arrive, I ALWAYS stop by the store to purchase cold Gatorade and water for the moving crews. This is not something that is required, but it is something I have always done to say “thank you” for your hard work and taking care of our customers moving with Armstrong.

Serving starts with an open heart to building a relationship, and being resourceful for others. One of the best rules to help guide us when we serve others is to use the “100/0 rule”.

I once heard Darren Hardy mentioned this on DarrenDaily. The 100/0 rule means to GIVE 100% when we serve others and expect 0% in return. That’s right, expect zero, zilch, notta!  So the next time we give someone a job referral, or sales referral, we don’t expect something in return. Just do it because you want to help! As a leader, the next time you give someone praise, don’t expect praise back. This is true servant leadership. Serving and lifting others will accelerate your career and move you into the lane of fulfillment!

One of my goals in 2019 is to give 50 LinkedIn recommendations (one per week) to deserving professionals. I recently had someone return the recommendation. This was very kind but it isn’t why I do it. I do it because it gives me fulfillment to lift others for success.
