What books are you reading? Accept the Challenge!

One of the highlights of my career was recently being asked to speak to faculty at my high school Alma Mater. My high school football coach had recently read my book “Find Your lane” and called to ask me to speak to faculty at Seminole Public Schools. It was an honor and very special day for me to share some of the many ways educators impact young people, as well as my career since graduating high school many years ago. Educators have an extraordinary role modeling leadership and values for young people and others in their path. As I mentioned, many people are impacted, but you may only hear from a few. Just know young people are watching and will draw energy later in life from some of the lessons they learned and experienced along the way. I was so fortunate to be able to come back to share my story and the impact faculty had on me as a student.

At the end of my speaking session, I am always interested in feedback. What were the takeaways, highlights and ideas that created interest or curiosity? One of the takeaways I heard was from a presentation slide that I presented with the following quote:

“Your success over the next 5 years will be determined by the books you read and the people you meet.” (Jim Rohn)

In past presentations, I have only posted the quote and talked about some of the books. However, this time, I decided to add several pictures of books that have impacted my career. One of the faculty members mentioned that during the session, another faculty member was telling her that some of the books I shared were on her list too! She resonated with the books, and it validated the lane she was in. I was so glad that I included the pictures. Feedback is such a wonderful gift. When you ask or when you are open to feedback, you will keep getting better on your career journey!

Today, I was to expand this list for you and ask what books have you have read that have impacted you? What books are you currently reading or plan to read this year? We can all learn from each other – and 5 years later we will all look back and think about some of these books and the path it has opened up for us.

A Company of Owners – Daren Martin
Coach Wooden’s Game Plan for Success – Wooden / Jamison

Another idea to get started is to join a community such as a book club. There are social book clubs like #HRBookClub” by Laurie Ruettimann on Facebook and Twitter or “Lazy Readers Book Club” created by Danny Brassell. There are also community meetings in your area. In Dallas, there is the “First Friday Synopsis” book reviews by Randy Mayeux each month.

One of my business groups recently challenged each other to surprise someone by mailing a book to them. It’s easy today with online delivery. It’s an amazing feeling getting a gift in the mail with a note that says “I read this and thought of you”. Go ahead.. accept the challenge this week to mail someone a book and watch how much it blesses both the receiver and YOU! I actually share a story in my book “Find Your Lane” about the feeling I had when I received a book from a dear friend. It was joyful. I have sent and received books over the years and will validate that “it never gets old”!

So, what books are you reading or have read that made impact. I would enjoy hearing your favorite book in comments below and what made it your favorite…. Share and bless others in their career! You never know who you might impact!

Quote of the week:If we encounter a man with a rare intellect, we should ask him what book he reads.” Ralph Waldo Emerson

Call to Action: 1) Accept the challenge 2) Select a book from the list and start reading. 3) Share a comment below about a book that made impact on you. I cant wait to hear from you. Let’s get started. 5 years is just around the corner!

  1. The Speed of Trust, by Stephen M.R. Covey, speaks of Trust as being a dividend or a tax, depending upon whether or not you have it. Further, it contains helpful ideas for gaining, maintaining and rebuilding Trust. I recommend it for any values-oriented leader.
