10 Answers from HR Leaders that make a difference!

Sharing Leadership Lessons in an interview with Bruce Waller…

I once heard Sara Blakely, (CEO Spanx) say, “The more you experience in life, the more you have to offer others.”  Today, I want for you to experience more by learning from some Super Stars serving in HR! I am inspired by people every day who model great leadership for others through their daily actions in human resources. These leaders have common threads that include empathy, love and care for people. They value people and the importance of relationship building.

In this HR Super Stars interview series, I want to introduce you to some of the best of the best in HR! These leaders make impact and will share challenges, successes, and perspectives on their journey as a business leader and in their personal lives. My hope is each person will inspire you and challenge you to become more for others on your journey.  So, let’s get started and meet our HR Superstars!

Today, we are going to hear from Debi Dault, President, Dault Global Solutions, Global HR Consulting. Debi is also a past State Director for Texas SHRM and leads the TexasSHRM Global HR Conference each year.

  1. Where did you grow up? In the HEB area.  Bedford, then Hurst, then Ft. Worth.  Born and raised.
  2. How did you get started in business/career?  I graduated from Texas Wesleyan University in Ft. Worth with a marketing degree and got my first job in staffing office temporaries.  So instead of marketing products I marketed people.
  3. Do you remember a challenge or life lesson that you had to overcome early in your career which made you a better leader?  Same company I started with, did an amazing job giving front line employees a great deal of power and decision authority.  So, early in my career, I had a lot of responsibility and managed 200 employees on a weekly basis. They challenged you to stretch your abilities and comfort zone on a daily basis.
  4. What was that moment when you knew that you had found your lane, your purpose?  The first time I was given a raise and a promotion for doing something I absolutely loved.
  5. What is your most valued achievement, and why? When I was promoted to Vice President of the Professional Staffing Division and became a member of the Board of Directors.
  6. Is there any one person who inspired or mentored you along the way? The CEO in the staffing company.  Because before she was a CEO, she was one of my managers.  She saw something in me that made her take me under her wing.  She was tough but she taught me a lot and I was able to be promoted right along beside her all the way to the top.
  7. Do you have a saying or creed that you live by?   Live everyday as it is your last!
  8. What book(s) are you reading or audio to help grow your leadership right now?  Currently listening to an audiobook called “12 Rules for Life:  An Antidote to Chaos by Jordan B. Peterso
  9. Can you share any of your daily disciplines that help you stay focused as a leader?  As someone with ADHD staying focused is a minute by minute challenge every day.  First thing I do every morning is read the news.  Not just one source, but I try and spend 30 minutes reading at least 5 different news sources which cover world news.  It’s important to be relevant with current events no matter what you do for a living.
  10. What advice would you give others to help them on their leadership journey?  Know Thyself, both Socrates and Plato talk about you will be ridiculous if you try to know obscure things if you don’t know yourself.  To be a good leader, you need to know your strengths and weaknesses and understand how you deal with them.

Thank you for sharing your wisdom and insights, Debi. You inspire so many in the HR community!

Some of my takeaways include… Awesome concept around marketing people instead of products.Overcoming challenges that stretch us out of our comfort zone build us into better leaders. We can all go back to that moment when we found our calling, and it usually involves someone lifting us up. Your promotion was huge lifter and loving the work makes it a bonus. Serving is one of life’s greatest achievements. Mentors make a difference, especially when they are tough and love you enough to bring you with them. Love your creed – it gives us purpose!  You are living it! The 12 rules for life book sounds interesting. I will have to check it out. Daily disciplines that create a system is key for success. Lastly, your advice is outstanding. Self-awareness is so important in the workplace and in your personal life to make the most impact.
