Some years are just bigger than others… and 2019 was definitely one of them. It was a year of excitement, challenges, successes and failures. One of the things I like to do at the end of the year is reflect and think about the life I am living, the goals I set for myself, the relationships I have developed, and the ones that need developing.
Many times, we look back and focus on the things we didn’t achieve, or the people we didn’t meet, or the promotions / raises we didn’t get, and so on and on and on… But what I like to do is reflect on the things that brought me the most joy… and build on top of that!
Yes, there were disappointments such as not achieving the sales goal I had for myself after having a stellar 1st half of the year… or when I wasn’t picked to speak at an event that I was hoping for, or when I heard we were in “best and final” for a major client and lost. Yes, these were all disappointments, but all we can do is build off them, learn from the failures and make adjustments along the way.
As I reflect, I see the success and joy list is soooooo much bigger than the disappointments and that makes me smile… Some of the things that brought me the most joy include:
Getting to experience the birth of our grand-daughter Sutton! She’s beautiful!
Competing in the Dallas “Tough Mudder” run with family and friends.
Texting my mom each day she bowls to see how she did!

Receiving so many personal notes of encouragement this year!
I have tried to make it a practice to write and send notes of encouragement in my career because I know what it feels like to receive them. One of the things that brought me incredible joy in 2019 was receiving some amazing and inspiration notes and book reviews. These words “fuel us” to keep going on our journey. There were a couple of notes that stood out in 2019 and want to share as they are also “Milemarkers” in 2019.
The first note was from my friend Bri! She sent me an inspirational note during the HRSouthwest conference to let me know that she (and some of her college student friends) were watching me as I got on the travel bus and noticed I asked the driver his name. It made an impression on them. I was filled with joy to read this note and grateful to her for sharing. This is something I like to do because it fills our hearts and moves us when people call us by our name. It makes people feel valued. My heart was so full receiving this note and it fueled me going. It also reminded me that people are always watching us, so just be YOU by modeling the change you want to see in the workplace and in the community – every day!
Another was from my friend Beth that shared a “LinkedIn” review, but specifically pointed out page 28 when she said “Finding your Lane has been a wonderful read and a book I will be using for years to come… Thank you for page 28- the BEST reminder. This made me go back to page 28 and then smiled… It absolutely made my day and year! Take action on your goals and dreams – even if it includes risks!
As you can see from the list of highlights, it’s all about people and will always be about people. Who are you investing in? Have you considered sending them a note or a book, or posting a linkedin recommendation or book review – without the, asking? Use the 100/0 rule. Invest 100 % in the, and expect 0%! Make this investment in 2020 and you will see the best return in your career.
Thank you everyone for an amazing 2019 – today I am grateful for YOU!
