When I joined Armstrong Relocation in 2004 as a new sales professional, I had zero business. I had operations experience, but no sales to get me started… so I read and listened to everything I could get my hands. Some of these authors/speakers included Zig Ziglar, Brian Tracy, John Maxwell, and Jeffrey Gitomer just to name a few. I also attended many conferences to hear inspiring speakers along the way like Darren Hardy, Mel Robbins, Zig Ziglar, John Maxwell, John Addison, and so many others. I was thankful for these incredible coaches and teachers for showing me the way as I continued to build momentum in my new role, but thought… wait a minute, if these men and women are such great sales people, then why are they writing books and speaking on stages everywhere. Why don’t they just double down and make more sales and build their enterprise. Maybe they aren’t really as good at sales as they lead on to be and decided to do something different. I was so confused as to why they were writing and speaking… but I kept reading, writing, and grinding each day as they continued to inspire me and fuel my growth.
I started writing in a personal journal in 1998, then created a monthly newsletter in 2004, then created a blog in 2011 that has turned into a weekly passion. I just kept writing… I also decided to enroll in toastmasters early in my career to be a better communicator with both my team and our clients. I volunteered and got involved with different local organizations to help me expand my network and to be a better business leader. I kept showing up even when I was tired or didn’t feel like showing up. I wanted to learn, grow, and expand my network and hopefully continue the momentum in my new business role too… I then took my writings and turned them into books to share with others.
Fast forward to 2020… I have finally figured out what they were doing…
It wasn’t about the sales profession,
– it was about the giving profession.
The best of the best were just incredible givers. They just gave and gave and gave…and kept giving every day! They wrote articles and shared, they had ideas and shared, they created strategies and tips and shared… They just continued to look for ways to add value for their networks and others in their path… I now admire these men and women more now than ever and aspire to be like these guys as a speaker and business leader to add value, encouragement, and inspiration for everyone in my path…
Are you in Sales, HR, Operations, Talent Acquisition, Finance, Accounting? Entry level to President… It doesn’t matter… It’s the same message for every role! We are all in the “giving” profession. When you show up each day… give your smile, give your kindness, give your ideas, give your talents, give your best. Just give and give and give! Your team needs you!
So, what’s the takeaway? Keep showing up, keep giving, and getting better… If you believe in your message — share it with others! The best part of life is about the connections and stories. People buy people, not ideas or programs. I am now loving the journey more than ever and hope one day people will say the same thing about me… I saw him speak and he inspired me to take action. He gave and gave and gave and gave and for this I am better at giving… Keep showing up, keep giving, keep dreaming big and keep loving your journey! I can’t wait to see what’s ahead for you!
