My favorite time of year…

Since we are now in the holiday season, I have recently started asking my guests on “Life in the Leadership Lane” podcast their favorite holiday. Is it Thanksgiving, or maybe Christmas? Last week, my guest Leslie Mensching shared her passion and excitement for Halloween as her family will decorate their yard every year with a theme. She gets super energized watching the cars drive by their home. I have always thought about Thanksgiving being one of my favorites since we get together with family and a spirit of gratitude… and Christmas is right up there too! However, when I was interviewing Melissa Carrillo, she mentioned her favorite was New Year’s because it was a time that we all get a fresh start. A new beginning… A fresh start… What a gift!

As I reflect on the new year, I think about how much energy I have during the month of December too. I use this time for goal-setting and planning the new year. We have all been in business planning mode during the last quarter, but a personal planning zone is just as important. This is the best time of year to reflect on the past, and dream about the future. When I was a young manager, I heard John Maxwell talk about his goal setting routine of getting out his pen and paper the day after Christmas and would use this time to plan because it was quiet in the home. All of the hustle and bustle was over. I loved this idea and have been doing this for the past 15 years as well. It is energizing to look back and think about the things you accomplished over the past year, while dreaming about the future.

For me, the end of the year is a time to RESET for a new season!

REFECT | EVALUATE | SET GOALS | ENERGIZE | TAKE ACTION

REFLECTING and EVALUATING what worked and what didn’t is a great way to get started. It’s a great practice to build a list of “want to’s” or SETTING GOALS, and share with a few people to get their input for alignment and perspective. Take the list and identify some big rocks, or 2-3 most important things you want to accomplish by the end of the year. This always ENERGIZES me and helps me stay focused on the big things. In business, we call these things our “critical success factors”. In others words, if these things happen, we know it has been a successful year, and if they don’t… well, then it wasn’t and we “reset” once again! Setting goals is our compass and helps guide our decision making each day. It also reminds us of our purpose in life!

After completing our goals, be sure and include your values and personal mission statement. You see, this keeps the most important or “the main thing the main important thing” in front of us every time we look at our lists… Now it’s time to print the list and TAKE ACTION! This is also helpful during the year when times get tough and we fall into “leadership fatigue” as I talked about in a previous blog. This is when we take out eyes of our goals and things we are looking forward to. When we have a plan in place, it gives us energy and makes it easier to “reset” when we get off track!

Many of us would agree that 2020 was an incredibly challenging year with the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic. In fact, it is a year that many would just assume forget! The good news is now we can RESET…and 2021 is just around the corner for all of us to have a fresh start.

So, what’s your favorite time of year? share below…

Quote of the Day: “”What you get by achieving your goals is not as important as what you become by achieving your goals.” -Zig Ziglar

Call to Action: Make a list of things you want to accomplish in 2021. Share with a friend, then identify your top 2-3 goals or big rocks to help you stay focused throughout the year! I can’t wait to see what the new year brings you…
