4 Lane Changes We All Need to Make!
This past week I was honored to be recognized by UniGroup for the 2023 Sales Stewardship Award at our annual Learning Conference in St Louis, Missouri. It was a total surprise when my name was called in front of hundreds of the best of the best in the moving industry. It was one of the most special highlights of my career. I remember a few weeks ago when our President invited me to the conference. I have been before, but shared that I typically don’t go to the conference and would enjoy attending if he wanted me to go. He went on to tell me how much he wanted me to be there as part of the team… so I said “count me in”. I was excited to attend representing The Armstrong Company in Dallas, Texas. I was looking forward to reconnecting with colleagues and friends in the moving industry and learning something new to share with our customers. After my name was announced, I looked at my boss next to me and smiled… I now know why he asked me to attend - and I was extremely grateful! As I reflect, I think about the journey we all go on during our careers. It is filled with a lot of ups and downs. Successes and challenges. Highs and lows. Many times, we wonder if we are making impact, or if we need to do change lanes by something different in our job, or our career. When we get in this place, we need to always think about making these lane changes to get to where we need to go:
1. Growth – Are we growing in our environment? Is it time to set some new goals?
2. Alignment – Are we in alignment with our values in the workplace and at home? Maybe it’s time for a re-brand with ourself or our organization?
3. Purpose – Are we planning and being purposeful in our work and in our everyday? How are we showing up and pursuing what’s important to us each day?
4. Service – Are we serving others in the workplace and in our community? How are we serving those around us? Sometimes it’s as easy as an encouraging note or a smile.
I have made many lane changes in my career, from changing jobs to changing perspective and sometimes changing my attitude. I have changed cities from Oklahoma to Texas and roles from operations to customer service to HR to general management and sales. I have changed from having no alignment to a place of balance. You see, we all have choices, but it starts with identifying our GAPS to be intentional about making changes that create impact for us and others around us. I once heard the average person makes 35,000 decisions each day. That’s a lot of choices! Making the decision to change lanes when you see a GAP will accelerate your career in so many ways.
What are your GAPS? Growth? Alignment? Purpose? Service? If you see no gaps, you are in a great place and I would encourage you to keep going because good things are just ahead! If you see a GAP, make the choice to change lanes and you will get right back on track!
