A Career That’s Making A Difference…
When I took my first job in Dallas, Texas, I felt a little disappointed because I felt like I wasted a degree by getting a job in the moving business. I was moving boxes and furniture thinking about others serving as doctors, teachers, and other professional careers. My perspective was out of alignment, because I was focused on me. But one day the light switch flipped when I started thinking about the people I serve when they are moving. Many are excited to relocate, while others are stressed about the idea of moving to a new city. Moving is challenging and here I was with an opportunity to really make a difference for others moving on to their next journey. Since then, I’ve looked not just for opportunities to encourage, but for the people that model great service. We often take for granted that the little things we do each day can make the biggest impact. While at a conference this week in our nation’s capital - I observed some of the most amazing people serving others and making tremendous impact - and what’s most amazing is they all serve in different roles. So, if you are unsure about making impact in your career - turn your focus on helping others and you’ll see what I see. I’m thankful for everyone serving someone … not just in the Thanksgiving season, but in every season.
This week I say… THANK YOU to the people making a difference in their career:
To the guy in the airport for letting us stand out of the rain waiting for a ride to the hotel after our long flight.
To the hotel clerk for looking at my driver license during check and taking time to say “I like your name “Bruce Wayne - Batman” to make us feel more welcomed during our stay.
To the lady who gave us an umbrella to walk across the street in the rain to enjoy a nice dinner while visiting a new city.
To the gentleman for making us a coffee when we get up in the morning to start the day.
To the SHRM conference staff for making us feel welcomed and bring that 5-star experience to our week.
To the waitress for bringing joy to our morning breakfast with her smile and kindness.
To the Uber driver for being available late in the evening to take us to visit historic sites in a city we didn’t know.
To each person that took the time to connect us to someone else while talking to them so we also get to experience a new friend.
To the gentleman waiting in front of our hotel to give us a ride back to the airport in the taxi when we new how little time we had before our flight.
To the woman behind the counter in the airport serving us pizza slices for dinner on our way home right before we started boarding.
To the airline stewardess for giving us a smile as we walked in the plane to let us know it’s going to be a safe flight and we’re glad you’re here with us.
Thank you… your role matters in every career. Keep serving others - you really are making a difference to someone each day. -Bruce
