Great Wisdom From Mom
242 words | 1.9 Minutes
During my run last weekend, I thought about my early years struggling as a vacuum cleaner salesman. Yep, my sales career actually started selling Kirby vacuum cleaners in college. I remember going to training and watching the top sales producers sharing how easy it was - get X appointments to sell X vacuums to make X dollars.
So, I went out and practiced by booking demonstrations with people I knew to understand the product and improve my selling skills. I booked demonstrations with my grandma Lillian, my aunt Peggy, and my mom.
Then I went for the close! …and asked my mom if she would buy one of the vacuums - they were about $1200 at the time… She responded, yes I’ll help you out by purchasing one – OH, BUT SHE IS FILLED WITH GREAT WISDOM as she then followed the YES up with this… as soon you sell your first one, then I’ll buy the second one. Excellent! I thought once I sell one, then the second sale will be a piece of cake.
Needless to say, my sales career ended a couple of weeks later when my training pay ended. Lol! My mom was basically saying, I’ll help, but you need to go earn it. Nothing is going to be given to you… One of the best lessons that I’ve carried with me!
What is the best advice you received from mom or dad? I would enjoy hearing your story!
