How are you re-inventing yourself?

I was driving into work in my “class room on wheels” this morning and was tuned into Jane Atkinson - “The Wealthy Speaker Podcast”. During the conversation, Jane’s guest Terri Sjodin mentioned something about re-inventing yourself. It made me pause, and it made me act. When I walked into my office, I created a two minute video about some of the things I have done to “re-invent” myself as a business leader. It was great for reflection. Watch the 2 min video !

Terri compared this concept to music bands – there are the one hit wonders, and there are bands that produce hit after hit for many years. These bands are always re-inventing themselves. When I think about bands that have produced a lifetime of hits, I think about The Eagles, Taylor Swift, Billy Joel, and more.

So what about you? In 2004 – I re-invented myself when I made a career change from operations after 8 years to building a career in sales and marketing that has now lasted more than 20 years. Since then, I have been fortunate to have become part of the “elite” group of sales professionals at The Armstrong Company recognized as a “Presidents Club” member. However, I find myself always staying in pursuit…

Lao Tzu once said, “the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step”. I remember when I began my new journey, I started with a newsletter to add more value for our clients – then I pivoted to a blog and continue writing to serve others. You can read and subscribe here MOVE TO INSPIRE and share with others.

I volunteered with many organizations to build my network and learn from others, and it helped me grow as a business leader as well as helped me see how it’s done! I have learned from many of you reading this blog today. I started writing books – so rewarding – and now speak around the US as a keynote speaker.

I re-invented myself when the pandemic arrived moving from in home moving surveyed to a virtual survey platform to help our clients relocating across the US and around the world. I started a podcast called “Life in the Leadership Lane” to stay connected – and now episode 200 comes out this weekend! WAHOO!!!!

and today I am trying to re-invent myself using video to share messages to help serve others. If you like the video - send me a note what you would like to see me talk about :)! You see - when we re-invent ourself, we get energized, we grow, we get comfortable with being uncomfortable, we energize and inspire others, and we build on our career – as well as our brand.

There is a lengendary story about a man that invented dynamite. Early on, he was excited to be know as helping with progress as dynamite was used to clear mountains to build roadways and more, but then dynamite was also used in war which killed a lot of people. The man’s name is Alfred and he became known as “the merchant of death”. Alfred decided to re-invent himself by creating “The Nobel Peace Prize” which is one of the most respected awards today. Alfred Nobel re-invented himself to be known for peace.

How about you? What have you done or can you do to re-invent yourself? It doesn’t matter if you are in sales, operations, HR, finance, payroll, or work in the warehouse, or answer the phones, you must always find ways to re-invent yourself so you can produce another hit! When you do – it will keep the momentum going and bring you more joy in every area of your life.

Quote of the Day: “I trained four years to run nine seconds and people give up when they don’t see results in two months.” Usain Bolt

Call to Action: Share something you have done to re-invent you. watch the video and let me know what stands out to you. I would enjoy hearing from you.
