It’s easy, and it’s hard…
One of the most common questions I get is “how do you get so much done each day?” My response is the same “I schedule it”. It sounds so easy, and yet it’s super hard. I’ve been thinking about this topic ever since I interviewed CHRO Suzanne Myers in “Season 1” on Life in the Leadership Lane podcast when she mentioned the phrase “it’s the easy hard stuff”. It’s so simple, yet it’s so complex! How can everything be so easy if it’s so hard? How can building trust in the workplace be so easy, yet it’s super difficult at times? How can promoting your business be so easy and yet it’s so hard to find the time? How can taking a certification be so easy, when only half of the people pass? How can planning be so easy when we have daily interruptions? How can leadership be easy when it’s incredibly difficult to hire and retain talent? How can moving be so easy yet it takes multiple people and many hours of planning and execution to make it a great experience? Many things are really easy when we have the right people, resources, mindset, intention… and time!
A few weeks ago, I was visiting with a friend that had recently been promoted into a new leadership role and we got on the discussion about how people develop influence in the workplace and how difficult it was for him. He was trying to “find his lane”, his influence among others in the department. He had the experience and it was an internal promotion, so why is it so hard? I quickly reminded him that they chose him for a reason and not to forget about the knowledge and value he brings to the organization. I also shared the way to create more influence is to be intentional about learning the business and investing in people. It’s so easy, but yet it’s so hard. Many times, we are so busy with our daily work/tasks that we forget - people is our real work.
So, how can we do easy when it’s hard? Be intentional … in our planning, in our schedule, in our work, in our relationships, in our everyday. The more intentional we are… the easy gets easier… and the hard gets less hard!

I have since refreshed some of my goals for the year. As I reflect on each of them and the outcome they will bring – I get excited. They all seem so easy, and yet I know it’s going to be really hard. Accomplishing anything big take’s purpose and an everyday pursuit – but when we finish, people will ask us – how did we do that? And we can all reply – I scheduled it!
