It’s Groundhog Day in the Moving Business!
It’s the last week of June in the moving business and feels like “Groundhog Day” waking up each morning to a sense of deja vu. It’s like we are living the exact same week over and over again this summer. Just like the movie “Groundhog Day” where Phil Connors (played by Bill Murray) was forced to wake up day after day, reliving each run-in with Needlenose Ned, his producer Rita, and his cameraman, Larry. Every day was groundhog day!
The last week of June is typically known for one of the 4 busiest weeks of the year for families relocating across the US and abroad. But actually, every week in June has felt like the last week of June this year and we predict this to continue in July and August due to robust real estate market creating challenges in buying homes, the scarce labor shortage we are seeing across all industries, and the rising costs for equipment and materials to just name a few… and for international moving, ports are backed up creating a bottleneck and delays like no other – which also affects container availability. Supply chain is over capacity… and more challenges are headed our way.
So, what can we do to help get through this unprecedented and challenging peak moving season this summer?
Be early, Be flexible, Be patient, Be communicating, Be in partnership to make sure you have resources for your candidates, and most importantly, Be kind. Everyone is facing some kind of challenge right now!
We have talked about the challenges of peak season in the past, but the post pandemic supply chain and labor shortage has created the most challenging times for all of us. It’s not just moving, it’s effecting all of us including restaurants, construction, real estate, and more… Let’s all remember that we are all experiencing challenges this year, but with good communication and a “we care” approach, we can get through this together.
Buckle up my friends… our most important work is just ahead!
