What’s your non-scale victory?

It’s a question that I wrote down as soon as I heard it while listening to a new podcast that my daughter Allison hosts called  “Scaling Back and Gaining Your Best Life!”  It’s an inspiring podcast about people sharing their weight loss journey. All of her guests have some of the most amazing stories about their successes and struggles, their mindset before, during, and after the process, and what helped them get back up to start living their best life once again. The podcast begins with the guest’s journey of transformation to inspire others that might be needing support.

However, the most inspiring part of the show is toward the end when Allison will ask her guests to share a “non-scale” victory. This is all about the joy of the journey… other than the weight loss number. It’s about the other things have brought them joy by accomplishing their goal. The responses are heartfelt and inspirational… Some of the non-scale victories include:

…when they share how good it feels to go to the store to try on clothes, or

…when they no longer need to ask for extenders for airline seats.

As I listened, I thought about my own “non-scale” victories. When we achieve big goals, what did we gain besides the achievement – or a non-scale victory…  So many times, we are focused on the numbers or KPI’s, or goals, that we forget about the other things that will bring us more joy… It’s the why! When we know this, it keeps us motivated to keep going. It’s a mindset and something that will anchor us for achievement… Here are a few of my non-scale victories as I reflect on my journey as a business leader:

 ·       Goal: Passing a certification

·       Non-scale (designation) victory: It gave me more confidence as a business leader and equipped me to have bigger conversations with others in my career.

 ·       Goal: Writing a book

·       Non-scale (author) victory: Created a way to share personal stories and lessons learned to better connect with others while identifying with my passion and purpose.

What are some other examples we might see in others areas such as a sales, operations or HR goal?

 ·       Goal: Increase sales

·       Non-scale (sales leader) victory: Help more people solve problems.

 ·       Goal: Recruiting / Retention

·       Non-scale (talent acquisition) victory: Create a better place to work.

 ·       Goal: Improve quality and safety scores

·       Non-scale (quality/safety) victory: Provide a better customer experience for everyone.

It’s more than the goal – it’s the journey. It’s such a fascinating question and one we should consider asking others.  What’s a non-scale victory you have recently accomplished? I would enjoy hearing your story. It’s what helps us breakthrough to create more joy in our everyday!

“It’s not about the things we want to achieve, it’s about the person we want to be.” (Bruce Waller)
