Leaders Show The Way - Meet Brad Long!
In my book, Drive With Purpose, I share stories about some of the most impactful leaders to help you see what it looks like to be around significance. It stands out! You see, we learn so much just by watching leaders making impact. Let me illustrate with this excerpt…
“I have been around some of the best leaders in my career. Many I have worked with and continue to work with in our company, while others have led other companies or served as a volunteer leader. As I think about the leadership traits shared in the book Drive With Purpose, I think about people like Brad Long, Vice President of Operations at The Armstrong Company, in Dallas, Texas. Brad has served our company for 39 years and counting. He is a great resource for everyone. But what’s made Brad so successful has been his consistency. He dresses up for success, and he arrives at the office before 5am each morning to begin planning the day. Brad always knows what is happening and connects with his van operators daily to check in, lending his ear to the constant challenges of moving families locally or across the US. I admire Brad because of his positive attitude. You wouldn’t know the challenges he deals with every day unless you were sitting in his chair. He knows that he must adapt to not only keep up with the schedule demand, but also with the changes happening around his moving crews.
Brad is proud of his team, and he shows it by posting scores on his wall, or after hanging up the phone by saying, “Hey, I just got off the phone with our van operator of the year.” Every interaction I see with Brad includes mentorship. He is that person that is available, approachable, and willing to share insights. He is ready to listen and teach where needed. Brad leads our operations training meetings and is willing to share his expertise while serving on committees. He is also a listener and willing to consider options when a van operator or customer has a need outside the moving guidelines. Mostly, Brad is a relationship builder. Every time I mention Brad’s name in the office, or when on a call to corporate or at industry conferences or events, I always hear the same response: “Brad is the best. Brad’s always willing to help us out. When I need something, my first call is to Brad.” That’s servant leadership—that’s leading a career of significance.
As you cultivate your leadership skills, remember that the true measure of your influence is not in the wealth or power you accumulate but in the positive impact you have on the lives of others and the legacy you leave behind.” Who do you know that reminds you of Brad? What traits stand out? What can you do to make more impact today? Let me know what you see that makes impact… and keep driving in the lane of significance!
