What do you want?
I was recently watching motivational videos on Instagram when I heard Oprah share most people struggle because they don’t know what they want. It got my attention… Do you know? Many people don’t and go on a pursuit – searching…
Most would say they want to make more money, have more connections, and be valued more in the workplace. Unfortunately, this doesn’t just happen. If you want more, you have to become more. Want to be a leader, connect with other leaders. Want to play an instrument, sign up for lessons… Want to write a book, start a blog… Want to increase your sales, learn to help others. Want to be a great speaker, find a speaking group. …and so on!
It’s often a long road, but you have to stay in pursuit…When I think about the long road, it reminds me of a story I once read in “The Compound Effect” about the magic penny. The story begins with a question, “would you rather take $3 million dollars or take a penny that doubles every day for 31 days. Most people would take the 3 million because it’s instant – we want it now… but the penny is the choice – after 5 days its only 16 cents, then after 10 days its only $5.16 and after 20 days its just over $5000 – but on day 29 it’s turned into $2.7 Million and day 31 surpasses $10 million dollars… Wouldn’t that be nice! It's the same in every area of our life. We have to be willing to put in the … and stay in pursuit.
Here are three things that might help in your pursuit… as you try to figure out what you want…
Show up – nothing happens if you don’t show up. When I wanted to get better at speaking, I started attending Toastmasters. It was 30 minute drive to the office, one hour for the meeting, and 30 minutes to drive back to office. That is a two-hour commitment every week for 2 years!
Bring energy - people want to be around energy - bring it every day to every event with every interaction. It is what I call a “standout trait. When you have energy – people notice!
Be the expert in your field - people want to know that you know your stuff. Get a certification and learn from others in the office. Know the business!
Show up – Bring Energy – and Be the Expert. It’s easy and it’s hard! It takes time, and it takes work – but it’s worthwhile work.
But here is the gold… as you become more, so will your confidence, so will your conversations, and so will your connections.
…and when you become more, the things you want will become more clear…
So, what do you want? Today I greet you at the beginning of your journey!
